Norrbotten, Sweden’s region with the highest rates of heart attacks and post-infarction mortality, is embarking on a major transformation of its heart care system aimed at empowering patients and enhancing accessibility to services. This health care overhaul is being shaped in partnership with the patient association HjärtLung, with advocates like Bernt Henriksson stressing the importance of educating patients on lifestyle’s impact on heart health to prevent relapses.

Despite these efforts, recent events highlight ongoing challenges within emergency care systems elsewhere in the region. In Västernorrland during summer 2023, a paramedic diverted an ambulance transporting a critically ill heart patient away from the urgent angioplasty procedure in Umeå to attend to a private matter. This detour delayed transport by 10 to 12 minutes, a delay that the Swedish Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO) noted could have seriously endangered the patient’s life.

The Norrbotten transformation initiative signals a commitment to address not only long-term care but also systemic issues affecting patient outcomes. By giving patients more control and improving communication about lifestyle influences on heart conditions, the region aims to reduce its leading heart attack statistics. The ambulance incident underscores the critical nature of timely emergency response, emphasizing the need for accountability within the healthcare workforce.
