Sweden Narrowly Loses to France in European Volleyball Championship, Prepares to Face Czech Republic

Sweden's women's volleyball team put up a strong fight but ultimately lost 1-3 to France in their final group match at the 2026 European Volleyball Championship held in Gothenburg's Scandinavium arena. The sets concluded with tight scores of 28-26, 13-25, 25-20, and 28-26, with the fourth set ending controversially against Sweden after a challenge overturned what had appeared to be a set point for the Swedes.

Despite the loss, Sweden had already secured a knockout stage berth following a dramatic comeback victory against Croatia, where they saved five match points. Isabelle Haak was a standout performer, leading scoring against France with 39 points in this match and setting a tournament record with 52 points against Croatia. Her remarkable scoring average of 8.7 points per set has been instrumental throughout the championship.

Sweden's effort in the match was commendable, particularly in the second set, which they decisively won 25-13, bolstered by strong serves from Haak. However, France regained control in the third and fourth sets, clinching the match and securing second place in Group D, leaving Sweden to finish third behind Italy and France.

Looking ahead, Sweden will face the Czech Republic in the round of 16. The Czech team, ranked 13th globally and playing on home soil, poses a tough challenge. Swedish players remain optimistic; Isabelle Haak expressed her affinity for being the underdog in lively venues, and Hanna Hellvig highlighted their determination to play with the same fighting spirit seen against France, emphasizing, "Nothing is impossible. We will go in with the same attitude as we did today and play from below."

The support from over 5,000 fans in yellow at Scandinavium has been a significant morale booster for the Swedish squad throughout the championship. Although disappointed by the close loss to France, the team’s performance confirms they can compete at the highest level and fuels confidence for the upcoming knockout stage match against the Czech Republic, scheduled for either Sunday or Monday.
