In a significant development for sports broadcasting in Sweden, TV4 and SVT have jointly secured the rights to broadcast the 2027 Women’s World Cup, which will take place in Brazil from June 24 to July 25, 2027. This event marks a notable occasion for Swedish viewers, as it will be SVT's first coverage of the Women’s World Cup since 1999.

TV4's sports director, Johan Cederqvist, shared his excitement about this partnership and the tournament, stating, "We are very happy to once again secure a major football championship where we believe in good Swedish medal chances." He emphasized the importance of football tournaments in uniting the audience and fostering a collective spirit among fans.

In addition to the main tournament broadcasting rights, SVT will also hold rights to air Sweden's qualifying matches, further solidifying their role in covering the Swedish women's national team's journey in the lead-up to the World Cup. Cederqvist expressed high expectations for the team's performance, considering their impressive history, having won medals in four of the last six tournaments, including a bronze at the most recent World Cup in 2025 held in Australia and New Zealand.

Max Bursell, SVT's sports chief, echoed the sentiments of his counterpart, highlighting that major sports events are vital for their programming and can truly engage viewers. "A World Cup has the ability to gather the audience and create community. We look forward to a long, wonderful championship summer," he remarked.

Additionally, this collaboration extends beyond the Women’s World Cup; both broadcasters will also share rights for the upcoming men’s World Cup in 2026 and the European Championship in 2028, with SVT having already secured coverage for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina. As the 2026 Women's World Cup qualifiers kick off in February 2026 under newly appointed head coach Tony Gustavsson, anticipation builds around Sweden’s performance in the tournament—a factor that has only fueled the enthusiasm surrounding this joint broadcasting agreement.
