Widespread Forest Fires Rage Across Sweden Amid High Preparedness Levels

In July 2026, Sweden is battling multiple forest fires across several regions, including Västmanland, Mariestads kommun, and Skaraborg, with authorities maintaining high preparedness and active firefighting efforts. On Thursday, significant fires affected traffic between Gävle and Söderhamn along the E4 highway, alongside a forest fire on Österön in Mariestads municipality covering an area equivalent to a football field. Two helicopters were deployed to help extinguish the fire in this region.

Västmanland experienced severe fires, including one affecting up to 7,000 square meters, with aerial water bombing operations underway. Despite considerable efforts, the fire in Surahammar, Västmanlands län, remained incompletely controlled. Additional fires in Skaraborg’s Mariestads and Karlsborgs municipalities prompted helicopter deployments, with the fire on Storön reported to be out of control. Furthermore, fires have been recorded in regions such as Värmland, near Södra Örsjön west of Arvika, and in Osby kommun, Skåne.

Sweden's Civil Contingencies Agency has ensured a robust firefighting readiness including ten helicopters, two scoop aircraft, fire depots, and high-capacity pumps. Two aircraft are actively stationed in France under the EU’s rescEU program, which covers most emergency costs while Sweden acts as host for shared resources. Incident commander Markus Green highlighted the dynamic nature of the situation, noting that resources are deployed based on urgent needs and that sending additional aircraft abroad remains a possibility depending on developments.

The agency also warned of heightened wildfire risks due to warm, dry, and windy conditions expected to affect large parts of Svealand, Götaland, and the southernmost portion of Norrland in the coming days, emphasizing public caution. Although firefighting efforts have made progress, the fires’ fluid situations, particularly in Västmanland and Skaraborg, underline the ongoing challenges faced by emergency services.

With multiple concurrent fires and the potential for expansion fueled by weather conditions, Sweden continues to prioritize vigilance and resource allocation to manage this critical forest fire season effectively.
