Sweden's LGBTQI rights rank drops to twelfth in Europe, raising alarms in the community.

    Key details

  • • Sweden ranks twelfth in Europe for LGBTQI rights.
  • • Other Nordic countries have surpassed Sweden in LGBTQI rights.
  • • Advocacy groups express concern over Sweden's declining status.
  • • Calls for improved recognition and protections for the LGBTQI community.

Sweden has been ranked twelfth in Europe for LGBTQI rights, according to the latest report from ILGA Europe, highlighting a worrying trend as the nation falls behind several neighboring countries in the Nordic region. This decline has sparked alarm among LGBTQI advocacy groups, particularly the RFSL (the Swedish Federation for LGBTQI Rights) which emphasized the importance of immediate action to remedy this situation.

Peter Sidlund Ponkala, president of RFSL, has expressed astonishment at Sweden’s diminished standing, noting, "Other countries have caught up and surpassed us." This comment underscores the urgency of addressing the evolving needs and rights of the LGBTQI community in Sweden. At the recent Pride celebrations in Stockholm, attendees including activist Mattias Törnbom called for a critical reassessment of how well the needs of the LGBTQI community are being recognized and met.

The report suggests that while Sweden has historically been seen as a leader in LGBTQI rights, this new ranking reflects a gap that has widened as other countries accelerate their progress. Stakeholders are urging a renewed focus from policymakers to enhance protections and ensure that Sweden's standing aligns more closely with its progressive ideals. The calls for action point to a need for substantial improvements in legal protections and social recognition for LGBTQI individuals.
