Survey Reveals Alarming Trends in Summer Alcohol Consumption Among Swedes
A new survey shows a rise in alcohol consumption among Swedes during summer vacations, raising health concerns.
Key Points
- • Four out of ten Swedes drinking every other day on vacation.
- • One in four drinks more than planned.
- • Over 40% negatively impacted by others' drinking.
- • More than half consume more alcohol abroad compared to home.
A recent survey from the organization IQ has shed light on the increasing alcohol consumption habits of Swedes during the summer months, particularly during vacations. Notably, four out of ten individuals (39%) reported drinking alcohol at least every other day while on holiday. Additionally, 26% of respondents admitted to consuming more alcohol than they initially planned. This shift in drinking patterns raises public health concerns, especially as one in six individuals (17%) expressed that they have questioned their own drinking habits due to the prevalence or volume of their intake.
Mojtaba Ghodsi, CEO of IQ, highlighted that despite a slight decrease in alcohol consumption during the pandemic, the trend has now stabilized and remains concerning. Over 40% of participants indicated they have been negatively impacted by the drinking habits of others, with one in five (21%) confirming they drink primarily to relax during their summer breaks. The survey also revealed that more than half (56%) of participants drink significantly more when vacationing abroad compared to their habits at home.
Ghodsi urged that individuals should pay attention to warning signs such as persistent cravings for alcohol or negative repercussions from drinking, suggesting that these may indicate a need to reevaluate their alcohol consumption habits.
