Storm Floris Brings Severe Weather Warnings and Tornado Reports in Sweden

Storm Floris brings severe weather alerts and tornado sightings as it approaches Sweden.

Key Points

  • • Storm Floris moving from the UK, arriving in Sweden on Tuesday.
  • • SMHI issues yellow warning for heavy rainfall in Halland and Västergötland.
  • • Local rainfall could reach up to 50 mm, raising flood risks.
  • • Tornadoes reported near Falkenberg, associated with thunderstorm activity.

As Storm Floris approaches Sweden, significant weather warnings have been issued across the region, primarily targeting the west coast. TV4 meteorologist Ingrid Eronin has forecasted that the storm, moving from the UK, will arrive on Tuesday, bringing with it strong winds and heavy rainfall that could affect the Västkusten areas most severely.

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall specifically in Halland and southwestern Västergötland. Residents in these regions may experience localised rainfall amounts of 30-50 mm, raising concerns about potential flooding in basements and issues with drainage systems, as well as increased hazards on the roads.

On August 2, multiple tornado sightings were reported near Falkenberg, coinciding with intense thunderstorm activity, indicating the storm's severe nature. Meteorologist Eronin has advised that individuals engaging in outdoor activities, including boaters and campers, should exercise caution and secure any loose items outdoors, as conditions are expected to be risky. Although the storm may weaken as it moves inland, it will still result in blustery weather conditions across Sweden.
