Severe Weather Expected in Sweden: Cold Temperatures and Thunderstorms on the Horizon
Severe weather is forecasted in Sweden, with colder temperatures and thunderstorms expected as summer closes.
Key Points
- • Heavy rain and thunderstorms are anticipated in eastern Svealand and northern Götaland.
- • Temperatures are currently 2-6 degrees Celsius below average for August.
- • Cold Arctic air is pushing down from a high-pressure system over the British Isles and Iceland.
- • Potential for snow exists in northern Lapland over the upcoming weekend.
As summer nears its end, Sweden is preparing for a significant weather shift with predictions of severe conditions. Meteorologist Lasse Rydqvist from Klart.se warns that the worst is yet to come, as heavy rain and thunderstorms are anticipated to impact large areas in eastern Svealand and northern Götaland.
Unusually low temperatures have already been observed across the country, sitting 2-6 degrees Celsius below the normal levels expected for this time of year. These conditions are unusual for August, with regions like Tullinge in Södermanland experiencing their coldest August morning since 2017. According to Rydqvist, the cold snap can be attributed to a high-pressure system over the British Isles and Iceland that is allowing Arctic air to flow southward into Sweden. During this period, southern Sweden would generally see daytime highs above 20 degrees Celsius and northern regions ranging from 15 to 19 degrees.
Looking ahead to the weekend, temperatures are expected to remain cold, with some potential for snow in the northern Lapland mountains. Despite the severe weather warnings from various meteorological forecasts, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has not yet issued any formal weather warnings. Citizens are advised to stay alert for updates as conditions evolve.
