Preem's HVO100 Becomes First Liquid Fuel to Achieve Svanen Certification

Preem's HVO100 fuel achieves Svanen certification, marking a significant step in sustainable fuel production.

    Key details

  • • HVO100 is the first liquid fuel certified by Svanen under new criteria.
  • • The fuel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 90% compared to traditional diesel.
  • • Svanen certification prohibits the use of palm oil and requires a minimum 75% GHG reduction.
  • • The certification process can take from one month to two years, emphasizing strict compliance.

Preem's Redefine HVO100 has been certified with the Svanen environmental label, making it the first liquid fuel to receive this recognition under new criteria established in 2022. This certification, recognized by 97% of consumers in the Nordic region, requires fuels to demonstrate a greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction of at least 75% compared to fossil fuels and prohibits the use of palm oil as a raw material.

Produced from waste products such as tall oil, animal fats, and food waste, Preem claims that HVO100 can reduce GHG emissions by over 90% when compared to traditional diesel. According to Anna Linusson, CEO of Miljömärkning Sverige, the rigorous certification process includes stringent documentation and compliance checks that can take anywhere from one month to two years to complete. Linusson highlighted that the success of HVO100 is significant not just for Preem but for encouraging further sustainable development within the industry, stressing that consumer choices are vital in promoting environmentally friendly products.

The Svanen label's emphasis on strict environmental standards is expected to foster a shift towards greater sustainability in fuel production, potentially paving the way for more products to qualify for the label, thus enhancing the overall market for eco-friendly fuels.
