Political Division Grows Over Sweden's New Cultural Canon

The unveiling of Sweden's cultural canon reveals deep political divides, with support from Sverigedemokraterna and criticism from Svenska Freds.

    Key details

  • • Sverigedemokraterna actively supports the new cultural canon as a reaffirmation of national identity.
  • • Criticism arises from Svenska Freds regarding the inclusion of the Saab Viggen fighter jet.
  • • The cultural canon aims to redefine Swedish history by emphasizing native culture over multicultural perspectives.
  • • There are concerns about the implications of militarization in societal values reflected by the Viggen's recognition.

Sweden's newly established cultural canon has ignited strong political support from the nationalist Sverigedemokraterna party, while facing sharp criticism from the peace organization Svenska Freds. The canon, unveiled on September 2, 2025, includes 100 works and events intended to reflect key aspects of Swedish history, featuring notable names like August Strindberg and Selma Lagerlöf. Among the entries, however, the inclusion of the Saab Viggen fighter jet has particularly stirred controversy. Alexander Christiansson, the cultural spokesperson for Sverigedemokraterna, defended the canon as a necessary shift away from multiculturalism, arguing that it highlights the importance of Swedish culture that has been marginalized. He indicated that the canon is part of a broader effort initiated by the Tidö Agreement, affirming the party's commitment to national identity and culture. "The narrative has heavily favored other cultures, and we aim to address that," Christiansson stated.

Conversely, Svenska Freds vehemently opposes the Viggen's inclusion, claiming it symbolizes an unhealthy glorification of militarization. Chairperson Kerstin Bergeå criticized the move as reminiscent of authoritarian regimes that romanticize military projects, highlighting that it ignores the tragic legacy of pilot fatalities during aircraft development. While Saab proudly supports the jet's recognition as an emblem of Swedish innovation, asserting it contributes to national safety, Bergeå remains adamant that this recognition legitimizes military pursuits contrary to Sweden's peace-oriented values. The ongoing debate underscores a significant cultural and political rift in contemporary Swedish society.
