Veteran ice hockey player Patrick Thoresen has officially announced his retirement at the age of 41, marking the end of a distinguished 25-year professional journey. Thoresen's announcement was made via Facebook on August 13, 2025, where he expressed his gratitude for his career but acknowledged the toll it took on his body. "After 25 years as a professional ice hockey player, my body has given out, and it was nice that it helped me make this decision to hang up my skates," he wrote.

Thoresen returned to Djurgården this past season after a decade away, playing a pivotal role in helping the team regain their status in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). His contribution was particularly notable during the 2015/2016 season when he recorded an impressive 48 points in 49 games. Throughout his career, he also made significant impacts in various leagues including the KHL and NHL, and had a successful stint in Switzerland.

Before joining Djurgården again, Thoresen was celebrated at his home club, Storhamar, where he won two league championships, with his latest victory coming in the 2023/24 season. However, despite his successful return to Djurgården and their promotion back to the SHL, his final season was marred by injuries, ultimately limiting his playing time in the playoffs. Thoresen's legacy in Swedish ice hockey as a skilled player and a team leader will undoubtedly be remembered, as he concludes his career having made substantial contributions to both his clubs and the sport overall.
