Key Points

  • • Fantenberg has struggled with a wrist ligament injury since last season.
  • • He played through pain, relying on painkillers and taping.
  • • Surgery is scheduled for next week, followed by at least six months of rehabilitation.
  • • Christoffer Ehn will captain the team during Fantenberg's absence.

Oscar Fantenberg, the captain of Linköping HC, is set to undergo surgery next week for a severe wrist ligament injury sustained last season. In a heartfelt disclosure, Fantenberg revealed he has been contending with the injury for an extended period, using painkillers and tape to play through the previous season. He stated, "I played the entire season on injections during breaks, then paracetamol and taping to get through the season."

The emotional impact of the injury has affected not only his professional commitments but also his family life, as he has struggled with the inability to engage in activities with his children, saying, "It’s tough when you can’t lift or play with your kids normally." Initially fearing that the injury could signal the end of his career, Fantenberg found hope after consulting with a top specialist in Gothenburg, who provided a potentially more optimistic outlook on his recovery. He noted, "I had prepared myself for the end, but he had another idea about what it could be."

Following his surgery, which aims to address not only the ligament damage but also other related injuries, Fantenberg faces a rehabilitation period of at least six months. During his absence, Christoffer Ehn will take over the captaincy, while Mikko Kokkonen joins the team as a temporary replacement. Although Fantenberg is hopeful for recovery, he acknowledges the uncertainty of the process, stating, "He can’t guarantee anything, but it’s a hope to follow." Their upcoming season remains uncertain as he embarks on this path to recovery.
