Northvolt Bankruptcy Delays Electric Truck Deliveries for Scania

Northvolt's bankruptcy significantly delays electric truck deliveries from Scania, impacting Swedish transport firms.

Key Points

  • • Northvolt's bankruptcy delays Scania's electric truck deliveries into next year.
  • • Ecolink awaits 20 electric trucks; Falkenklev Logistik has 50 trucks delayed.
  • • Scania struggles with battery supply issues due to Northvolt's production problems.
  • • Scania is adapting its battery factory to prevent future disruptions.

The bankruptcy of Northvolt, announced on August 28, 2025, is causing significant delays in the delivery of electric trucks from Scania to various transport companies across Sweden. This disruption poses serious challenges for companies relying on Scania's electric trucks to meet the growing demand for fossil-free transportation.

Due to Northvolt's production issues that ultimately led to its insolvency, Scania has been unable to access essential battery supplies, resulting in postponed delivery schedules. Notably, transport company Ecolink had signed a framework agreement with Scania for 20 electric trucks in June 2024. Ecolink's CEO, Pontus Sahlgren, expressed urgency in a recent statement, saying, "We have customers waiting for us to provide fossil-free transport, and we need to be able to deliver on that."

Similarly, Falkenklev Logistik faces similar difficulties, having placed an order for 50 electric trucks with Scania in August 2024. Their CEO, Victor Falkenklev, revealed, "We are currently waiting for a significant number of Scania trucks, which we understand are delayed due to Northvolt. We have been informed that they will be delivered next year instead."

Scania's press chief, Erik Bratthall, acknowledged the challenges posed by these delays, emphasizing the company's attempts to ramp up production in response to high demand. "Of course, we would have liked to produce at a higher rate given the demand. Unfortunately, these ramp-up disruptions have led to customers waiting for deliveries," he noted.

In response to the situation, Scania is planning to modify its battery factory to accommodate a wider range of battery cell suppliers, hoping to build resilience against future disruptions. The impact of Northvolt's bankruptcy on the electric truck supply chain highlights the vulnerability of emerging technologies, especially as Sweden continues its transition to sustainable transport solutions.

The situation underscores the importance of reliable supply chains in the industry and the broader implications for Sweden’s green transition efforts amidst these significant setbacks.
