Niclas Carlnén, the former CEO of Malmö FF, has been appointed as the new Secretary General of the Swedish Football Association (SvFF), a role he will formally assume in January 2026. Carlnén, 53, succeeds Andrea Möllerberg, who was dismissed earlier this year following harsh criticism. Tobias Tibell will serve as interim Secretary General until Carlnén's start date.

The recruitment process was comprehensive, involving more than 100 candidates and around 30 interviews. The selection was overseen by new federation chairman Simon Åström along with Lena Wallgren and Martin Åkerman, following Åström's takeover from Fredrik Reinfeldt. Åström praised Carlnén’s leadership experience and his skill in building cooperative relationships with national and international stakeholders.

Carlnén, who has led Malmö FF since 2014, also brings experience from the European Club Association and UEFA’s committee for club competitions. He expressed deep humility and enthusiasm for his new role, emphasizing football's impact from grassroots youth activities to the elite national teams.

Additionally, the federation is redefining the Secretary General’s role to focus on specific tasks, reducing its previous broad responsibilities. This change aims to streamline governance and support the development of Swedish football moving forward.
