Key details
A significant multi-billion euro investment has been announced for the Energiön offshore wind power hub located southeast of Skåne, Sweden, with contracts awarded to Siemens Energy for the construction of converter stations. The project will support the transmission of electricity generated from wind power in the Baltic Sea directly to Denmark and Germany after conversion on Bornholm.
Siemens Energy secured a contract valued at one billion euros, equivalent to approximately 11 billion kronor, which encompasses the construction of four crucial converter stations: two situated on Bornholm, one in Zealand, and a final one in Germany. These developments were confirmed by the energy operators Energinet and 50 Hertz. Energinet's CEO, Thomas Egebo, highlighted the importance of the Energiön project for the future of energy supply, stating, "This marks a significant advancement towards a future where offshore wind energy from the Baltic Sea can supply electricity to millions of customers."
The overall budget for the BEI (Bornholm Energy Island) project has been estimated at seven billion euros, underscoring a growing trend of substantial investments in offshore wind energy across Europe. This innovative approach to renewable energy aligns with broader goals of enhancing the efficiency of electricity supply and reducing carbon footprints throughout the European region.
Moreover, the Energiön hub is establishing synergies with other international projects, including the development of an artificial island in the North Sea by 50 Hertz's parent company Elia, which carries a budget of 3.8 billion euros. As such, the Energiön project promises to be a landmark in the transition toward sustainable energy solutions in the region, with heightened collaboration among Danish and German network operators.
As this project continues to develop, stakeholders anticipate further expansion of offshore wind capabilities that will play a crucial role in the energy landscape of Europe.
