Helsingborg is facing a growing financial crisis among its residents, with 16% struggling to pay essential bills and 10% of children growing up in households with debt to Kronofogden. Debt levels in Sweden are escalating, increasing by more than 52 million kronor daily, driven by rising food prices, interest rates, and electricity costs. To address this, the city has introduced Ekonomicoachen, a new online platform designed to help residents gain control over their finances. The platform offers tools for everyday money management, guidance on prioritizing payments, and support for navigating debt restructuring.

Linda Lindström, a budget and debt advisor in Helsingborg, highlights that stigma often prevents individuals from seeking help, and many residents remain unaware of available assistance. Ekonomicoachen also equips professionals like teachers and social workers with resources to confidently discuss financial issues with those they assist. The initiative aims to make financial counseling more accessible and foster hope among Helsingborg residents.

Research links financial difficulties with mental health challenges; notably, one in five over-indebted individuals has attempted suicide, underscoring the urgency of support services. Currently, Helsingborg has three advisors to assist residents, but demand has surged amid rising economic pressures. The launch of Ekonomicoachen represents a proactive step to empower Helsingborgers to manage financial hardship more effectively and improve their overall well-being.
