Daniel Ståhl, the accomplished Swedish discus thrower, secured a thrilling gold medal at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo with a final throw measuring 70.47 meters. This remarkable achievement came during a dramatic competition where Ståhl found himself in second place before launching his winning throw, which surpassed the previous best of Mykolas Alekna at 67.87 meters.

Ståhl's victory was even more impressive considering the challenging conditions under which the final was held. A rainstorm caused a two-hour delay, hampering the performance of several competitors who struggled with slippery conditions in the throwing ring. Nonetheless, Ståhl kept his composure and delivered a record performance under pressure. "I have matched my biggest idol, Mats Sundin," Ståhl said, reflecting on the significance of this build-up to three World Championship titles, alongside an Olympic gold from 2021.

This latest victory marks Ståhl's fourth gold medal in his career, adding to his triumphs from 2019 and 2023.

In the aftermath of his success, there have been calls for the bragdjuryn, a prestigious awards committee in Sweden, to recognize Ståhl with a second medal for his outstanding performance at the championships. His coach, Staffan Jönsson, emphasized the importance of this milestone and hailed the victory as unparalleled in the world of sports.

Overall, Sweden performed admirably at the World Championships, finishing fifth in the medal standings, with Ståhl’s gold contributing to a total of three medals—two golds and one bronze. The event also showcased other notable achievements, such as Mondo Duplantis setting a new pole vault world record at 6.30 meters, and Andreas Almgren's historic bronze in the 10,000 meters, marking Sweden's first medal in long-distance running.
