Västernorrland Activates Satellite Resources Amid Severe Flooding

As severe flooding continues to impact Västernorrland, local authorities have activated support from the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) to utilize satellite imagery for assessing the situation. The initiative aims to analyze the effects of flooding predominantly in the Moälven and Nätraån rivers, focusing on infrastructure and the safety of the local population.

Following heavy rainfall, approximately forty roads have sustained damage, and two freight trains have derailed due to the flooded tracks. Furthermore, certain areas, including the village of Kubbe near Örnsköldsvik, are now completely submerged. Warnings from the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) for these rivers are expected to remain until Thursday as more rain is anticipated throughout the week.

According to Elin Ulvmyr from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), the satellite support will provide critical information for managing the current crisis and planning future interventions. The utilization of Copernicus EMS will continue unless otherwise assessed by the Västernorrland County Administrative Board. This approach underscores the importance of rapid response and monitoring technologies during natural disasters.
