In a historic achievement, 23-year-old Truls Möregårdh has become the first Swedish table tennis player to reach the semifinals of a Grand Smash event, specifically at the Europe Smash tournament in Malmö. This milestone was confirmed following a tense quarterfinal match where Möregårdh defeated South Korea's An Jae-Hyun, ranked 17th in the world, with a score of 4-2.

The quarterfinal bout showcased a rollercoaster of emotions and skill. Möregårdh initially took control of the match, leading by two sets before facing adversity in the fifth when he squandered a 7-4 lead, eventually dropping that set. However, he rallied back to secure victory in the sixth set, saving three match points and clinching the match with a tightly contested 14-12 win. Möregårdh, currently ranked seventh globally, reflected on his historic progress, expressing his eagerness to perform in front of a home crowd: "The goal was first to win the whole tournament, but this was a milestone to get this far and be historic."

In the semifinals, Möregårdh is set to face Germany's Benedikt Duda, who is ranked second in the world. Duda reached this stage by convincingly defeating Brazilian opponent Hugo Calderano 4-0. Amidst the stakes of the prestigious tournament, described as one of the most significant in table tennis with a prize pool totaling nearly one million kronor for the singles winner, expectations are high for Möregårdh to continue his remarkable run.
