  • • Sweden strengthens defense ties with Thailand through this agreement.

Thailand has officially secured a significant military deal with Sweden, ordering four new Jas 39 Gripen fighter jets for a total cost of 5.3 billion kronor (approximately 5 billion SEK). The deal was formalized during a signing ceremony held at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm, attended by a notable Thai delegation led by Air Force Chief Punpakdee Pattanakul. This latest acquisition supplements Thailand's existing fleet of 11 Gripen C/D models, which played a vital role during a brief border conflict with Cambodia last summer.

According to Micael Johansson, CEO of Saab, the inclusion of Thailand as a customer underlines their trust in the Gripen's capabilities. The delivery of these new Gripen E/D models is scheduled to commence between 2025 and 2030. The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration confirmed the deal, highlighting the growing defense collaboration between Sweden and Thailand.

The Gripen aircraft have been a key component of Thailand's air force since their initial purchase in 2008, and this contract enhances their strategic military abilities as they continue to modernize their fleet.

With this deal, Sweden strengthens its position in the international defense market and reinforces bilateral ties with Thailand, reflecting growing cooperation in military and strategic sectors.
