Emma Fourreau, a Swedish-French Member of the European Parliament (MEP), has begun a hunger strike while detained in an Israeli facility after her involvement in a humanitarian mission aimed at delivering aid to Gaza. The mission, conducted by the Freedom Flotilla network, was thwarted when Israeli naval forces boarded the ship Handala, intercepting 18 activists, including Fourreau, and two journalists from Al Jazeera during the operation.
The activists on the ship intended to breach the blockade imposed on Gaza by delivering essential supplies such as food and medicine to those in need. In a strong statement on social media, Fourreau lamented, "It is unthinkable to receive food from an army that starves the Palestinian people," emphasizing her protest against Israeli policies towards Gaza.
While the detention marks a significant escalation in tensions related to humanitarian efforts in the region, concerns have arisen from Fourreau's family regarding her health as she enters the second phase of her hunger strike. The activists now face legal scrutiny for their actions, and a broader pro-Palestinian atmosphere has been seen, notably in Berlin, where 57 people were arrested during coinciding demonstrations alongside the city's Pride parade.
