The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall across southern and central Sweden, affecting a stretch of approximately 580 kilometers. The warning is in effect from 1 PM to 9 PM today, with forecasts indicating potential rainfall of up to 40 millimeters in some areas, raising concerns about flooding in basements and drainage systems.
Meteorologist Josefine Qvarnesjö-Bergstedt explains that the heavy rainfall is primarily due to a recent period of high temperatures, which has led to air saturation conducive to thunderstorms. She noted the unpredictability of pinpointing exact areas most likely to be impacted, likening it to 'microwaving popcorn'. Furthermore, temperatures in eastern Norrland, previously reaching around 30 degrees, are expected to drop significantly to about 20 degrees overnight as cooler air moves in, effectively ending the current heat warning. In southern Sweden, warmer weather will persist over the weekend with temperatures around 25 degrees.
