Samuel Russom Suspended for Doping: A Three-Year Ban Shakes Swedish Athletics

Samuel Russom is suspended for three years for doping, prompting warnings from Swedish Athletics Federation about dietary supplements.

Key Points

  • • Samuel Russom banned for three years for doping after testing positive for meldonium.
  • • He claims to have ingested the substance unknowingly through a dietary supplement.
  • • The Swedish Athletics Federation warns athletes against supplements and stresses personal responsibility.
  • • As a consequence, Russom will forfeit his marathon and half-marathon titles.

Long-distance runner Samuel Russom has been suspended for three years due to a doping violation involving the substance meldonium. The Swedish Athletics Federation (SAF) announced the suspension after Russom tested positive during the Swedish Marathon Championships in May. The 34-year-old, who has competed in Sweden since 2018 but does not hold Swedish citizenship, stated that he unknowingly ingested the banned substance through a dietary supplement purchased to cope with fatigue.

Initially facing a four-year ban, Russom received a reduced suspension after accepting responsibility for his actions. As part of the sanctions, he will lose all his results from May 10 to June 16, 2023, which includes disqualification from his titles in the marathon and half-marathon, with those medals being reassigned to other athletes.

The SAF's General Secretary, David Fridell, called the situation 'deeply unfortunate,' emphasizing the risks of dietary supplements which can often contain prohibited substances. He reiterated the federation's commitment to educating athletes on doping prevention and the importance of consulting with dietitians. Athletes are urged to maintain a balanced diet without reliance on supplements. Fridell's warning underscores the athlete's ultimate responsibility for what they consume, aiming to prevent similar incidents in the future.
