A new report from the Swedish Gender Equality Agency (Jämställdhetsmyndigheten) highlights a concerning trend regarding violence experienced by men in their intimate relationships. According to findings published on September 29, 2025, one in five men will face violence at some point in their lives. This comprehensive report reveals alarming statistics that indicate 11.7% of men aged 16 to 84 experienced violence in 2022, predominantly at the hands of women.

The findings underscore that psychological violence is the most common form of abuse faced by men, with even more severe cases identified in same-sex relationships or those encompassed by honor-related violence. Gender Equality Minister Nina Larsson commented on the vulnerability of men under honor cultures, noting that they often endure significant physical violence and oppression in intimate settings. Many young men perceive a substantial risk when reporting such abuse, fearing that they will not be believed.

This cultural backdrop complicates men’s ability to seek help, as prevailing norms discourage them from voicing their experiences. As articulated by investigator Maria Björsson, stereotypical gender roles significantly inhibit men from discussing their victimization, leading to recommendations for institutions such as schools and health services to proactively question both men and women about their encounters with violence.

Moreover, the report sheds light on a disturbing trend where young males, feeling pressured by honor cultural expectations, may be coerced into committing violence against female relatives, perpetuating a cycle of abuse and control. Larsson highlighted the reluctance of these boys to approach authorities for help, grappling with societal narratives that valorize strength and toughness, which render them silent about their victimization. This intersection of social expectations and personal trauma necessitates urgent attention towards reforming societal attitudes and enhancing support mechanisms for male victims of violence.

As the conversation surrounding men's experiences of violence in intimate relationships progresses, significant strides in awareness and policy recommendations may be required to address this critical social challenge.
