Renewed Investigation into Fire in Biskopsgården That Killed Five-Year-Old Girl

A fire that tragically resulted in the death of a five-year-old girl in Biskopsgården, Göteborg, is currently under renewed investigation. The fatal incident, which took place in February, occurred under circumstances where the child had been left home alone overnight multiple times. Despite a previous lex Sarah review concluding that the Socialtjänsten (social services) had not violated laws or regulations, calls have emerged for an external inquiry to thoroughly re-examine the case.

Marie Larsson, director of the social services department in Hisingen, acknowledged the need to reassess internal procedures, stating, “Even if we have not violated laws and regulations, we may need to change routines and working methods.”

Legal proceedings have already led to the mother of the child being sentenced to six years in prison for gross negligence resulting in another’s death, in addition to 42 counts of unlawful deprivation of liberty. This sentencing reflects the severity of the mother’s responsibility for leaving the child unattended.

The renewed investigation appears driven by the gravity of the event and the community’s concern over social services' handling of the situation. It highlights efforts to prevent similar tragedies through possible changes in routines or operational practices within welfare services.

As of now, there are no indications that social services will face legal repercussions, but the ongoing scrutiny demonstrates a prioritization of child safety and accountability in Göteborg’s social care management.
