Ericsson Unveils ISAC Technology to Precisely Track Drones Using 5G Networks
Ericsson introduces ISAC technology leveraging 5G mobile networks to detect and track drones with high precision, enhancing airspace security.
Key details
- Ericsson's ISAC technology detects and tracks drones using 5G mobile towers without drones needing network connection.
- The system uses multiple towers and AI to achieve tracking precision of a few meters for drones as small as 10x10 cm.
- Pilot projects start in 2027 with broader deployment expected by 2028.
- The technology has been demonstrated successfully in the USA and Finland, targeting applications in defense, security, and urban airspace monitoring.
Ericsson has developed a groundbreaking technology named ISAC (Integrated Sensing and Communication) that enables the detection and tracking of drones using existing 5G mobile networks. This innovation leverages the radio signals emitted by mobile towers to locate drones by analyzing reflected radio waves, enabling continuous monitoring without requiring drones to be connected to the mobile network.
ISAC operates by calculating a drone's location based on signal reflections from multiple mobile towers working collaboratively to enhance accuracy. AI algorithms differentiate drones from other airborne objects, allowing the system to gather detailed data such as location, size, shape, and speed. According to Freddie Södergren, head of defense and critical societal networks at Ericsson, the system can track commercial drones as small as 10x10 cm with precision down to a few meters.
Pilot projects are planned to begin next year, with a wider rollout targeted for 2028. The technology has already undergone demonstrations in several countries, including successful trials with AT&T in Texas and in partnership with Finnish company Erillisverkot in Helsinki. Ericsson envisions ISAC playing a critical role in defense and security to address unauthorized drone activity in restricted airspaces such as near hospitals and airports. Additionally, it could boost urban airspace monitoring and improve safety in transportation sectors.
Ericsson’s ISAC represents a significant advance in airspace security, combining mobile network infrastructure with AI to offer a versatile and effective tool for drone detection, tracking, and management.
