Key details
A group of five young men in Örnsköldsvik have been convicted for a violent assault and other related criminal offenses linked to their affiliations with the vigilante group 'Pedo Hunting Sweden' (PHS). The incident, which took place in May last year, involved the men luring and brutally attacking a man they accused of being a pedophile, with the assault caught on video and shared on social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Telegram. This attack occurred at the Travel Center in Örnsköldsvik, where the victim was subjected to punches and kicks, including assaults while on the ground.
According to court rulings from Ångermanlands tingsrätt, four of the group members, all connected to violent supporter environments, received prison sentences ranging from one to over two years for aggravated assault. The youngest, a 17-year-old, was sentenced to youth care. Moreover, one member of the group was convicted of multiple counts of child pornography and invasive photography for secretly filming girls in a school shower where he worked as a handyman; he received a prison sentence of three years and three months.
PHS is described as a loosely organized network that targets alleged pedophiles through coordinated plans involving encrypted chats, luring suspects to confrontations often escalating to violence, and recording the encounters for public exposure. Since last year, over twenty individuals with ties to PHS have been convicted for various crimes tied to their vigilante actions. The court emphasized how the group's organized and violent methods undermine the rule of law and pose significant risks to victims and society at large. Despite these convictions, all accused denied the most serious charges.
This case highlights the contradictory and criminal behavior within pedophile hunter networks that claim to pursue justice but instead engage in unlawful violence and invasive criminal acts, sparking concerns about vigilantism and its consequences in Sweden.
