Organized Theft Ring Targets Over 40 ATVs in Northern Sweden
A theft gang has stolen over 40 ATVs in northern Sweden this summer, prompting police warnings and public appeals for assistance.
Key Points
- • Over 40 ATVs stolen in northern Sweden this summer.
- • The theft gang targets popular brands like Can-Am, Polaris, and Yamaha.
- • Insider information from the Swedish Transport Agency is used to locate ATVs.
- • Police struggle to capture the gang due to their operations in remote areas.
In a disturbing wave of crime, a well-coordinated gang has been stealing all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) across northern Sweden, with more than 40 reported thefts this summer. The thefts have primarily affected regions including Norrbotten, Västerbotten, and Jämtland, where popular brands such as Can-Am, Polaris, and Yamaha have been specifically targeted.
Magnus Eklund, a crime coordinator from the Västerbotten police, stated that the thieves obtain detailed information on potential targets directly from the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen). This access to insider information allows the gang to effectively locate and steal these vehicles, especially in remote areas where police presence is minimal.
Despite active police efforts, which include deploying crime scene investigation dogs and reviewing surveillance footage, law enforcement has struggled to make any arrests or identify suspects. Eklund expressed his frustration at the situation, noting that thefts continue to occur overnight with little progress in solving the crimes.
Due to their difficulty in apprehending the criminals, the police are appealing to the public for help. They are encouraging ATV owners to take proactive measures by requesting a registration block from Trafikverket, which is viewed as a more effective deterrent than simply concealing the vehicles from potential thieves. This registration block could limit the ability of thieves to resell stolen ATVs, thus reducing the incentive to continue these thefts.
