Key details
Linköping HC has signed Finnish defenseman Mikko Kokkonen to fill the gap left by the injured Oscar Fantenberg. The 24-year-old comes from the Toronto Marlies in the AHL, where he has been honing his skills after being drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019 without making it to the NHL.
Kokkonen is known as a two-way defenseman, recognizing his strengths in both defensive plays and puck handling. He expressed his eagerness to join the team and contribute to their success, stating, "I want to help the team win and build a competitive unit."
Previously, at just 15 years old, Kokkonen made history as the youngest debutant in Finland's top league with Jukurit. He has also gained international experience, winning a gold medal at the U18 World Championships and a bronze at the junior World Championships for Finland.
The need to recruit Kokkonen arose after Fantenberg underwent surgery on his hand, which will keep him out for the entire upcoming season. Sporting director Peter Jakobsson praised Kokkonen’s character and professionalism, emphasizing his well-rounded defensive capabilities and good skating. Kokkonen is expected to join Linköping HC in the coming week, bringing added strength to their defense as they prepare for the season.
