A juror in a high-profile Swedish rape case involving the assault of a 100-year-old woman has been suspended and reported to the police for breach of confidentiality after publicly criticizing the court's ruling. The case centers on 38-year-old Shakir Mahmoud Shakir, an Iraqi citizen convicted of raping the elderly victim at her home. He was sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to pay 220,000 kronor in damages but was not deported, a decision that sparked outrage among the public and politicians, including Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

The court's decision not to expel Shakir to Iraq was based on insufficient grounds for deportation, a point that has drawn sharp criticism from Swedish ministers. After the verdict, a nämndeman (lay judge) publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s assessment and voiced a desire for the perpetrator’s deportation on a media platform linked to the Sweden Democrats. Prosecutor Caroline Stenbäck has announced plans to appeal parts of the ruling, including the crime’s categorization and other aspects. Shakir, who was also acquitted in a separate rape allegation involving a 94-year-old woman, worked as a caregiver in home services.
