Jesper Östlund, the 34-year-old coach known for leading IF Hallby to their first-ever playoff appearance, has been appointed as the head coach of the Kosovo national handball team. His appointment was officially announced on September 2, 2025, and he will also be assisted by Jasmin Zuta, who brings valuable experience to the team.
Östlund's connection to Kosovo is personal; his wife, Blerta, is from the region, which motivated his involvement with the national team after they sought new leadership. "It will be exciting to do something completely different in handball than what I have done before," Östlund commented, expressing enthusiasm for the challenge ahead.
Currently classified as a C-nation, Kosovo has never qualified for a major handball championship. However, Östlund is optimistic about the team's potential, noting that they were just one victory short of qualifying for the recent European Championships. With the tournament now expanded to 24 teams, he believes there is increased hope for Kosovo to earn a spot in future competitions.
Östlund, who has signed a two-year contract with the national team, will continue his responsibilities at Hallby simultaneously. He is also considering recruiting Gzim Salihi from Alingsås to enhance the national squad’s strength, aiming ultimately to guide Kosovo to their first major championship qualification.
