Entrepreneurs Call for Infrastructure Maintenance Over New Projects

In a significant call to action, entrepreneurs in Sweden are urging a shift in infrastructure spending priorities, emphasizing that maintenance of existing structures should take precedence over new construction projects. Recent insights from nearly a thousand entrepreneurs reveal that four out of five prioritize infrastructure maintenance as crucial to sustaining competitiveness. This demand is particularly pronounced among rural business owners, with over 90% advocating for maintenance over new constructions, illustrating a critical need to address infrastructure deficits in less populated areas.

Two-thirds of the surveyed entrepreneurs believe that current conditions of road and railway networks impede their competitive operations. This sentiment is reflected in the concerns raised about previous infrastructural investments, which were directed towards low-return prestige projects rather than essential maintenance, leading to a recent infrastructure plan being labeled unprofitable despite hefty expenditures amounting to nearly 1000 billion kronor.

Magnus Demervall, CEO of Företagarna, along with infrastructure expert André Nilsson, highlights specific local disruptions caused by neglected infrastructure, such as delayed deliveries in Småland and extensive detours due to bridge closures in Norrbotten. They propose that future infrastructure budgets should follow three principles: prioritize maintenance, bolster competitiveness, and assure economic viability of projects. The government's upcoming presentation of Trafikverket's prioritization list is seen as a pivotal moment to address these infrastructure challenges effectively and support local economic growth.
