In a dramatic conclusion to the discus throw final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships held in Tokyo, Daniel Ståhl secured his third world championship gold medal amid chaotic weather and significant competition delays. Ståhl's final throw of 70.47 meters came during a final that was marred by heavy rain, which prompted a two-hour postponement and led to a crucial decision-making moment among the finalists.

The competition was characterized by inclement weather that led to slippery conditions on the throwing circle. Despite this, the twelve finalists held a vote on whether to proceed or postpone the event, ultimately deciding to continue even as rain persisted. This decision was reached after a tie, with six finalists favoring continuation and the other six favoring postponement. Ståhl, who voted to continue, reflected, "It was the right choice."

Ståhl entered the final having already made a significant mark in the pre-competition rounds, achieving a record 69.90 meters that was the longest throw in the history of a qualification round at an international championship. In the final, after struggling with an initial foul and a throw of 63.74 meters, he found himself behind former world record holder Mykolas Alekna, whose earlier throw of 67.84 meters led the competition. Ståhl bounced back with consistent throws, including a 66.97 meters in the fifth round, before clinching victory with his decisive final throw, showing exceptional skill and resilience under pressure.

Coach Staffan Jönsson praised Ståhl's performance, calling it a huge achievement given the circumstances. Nevertheless, the rain had raised concerns over safety, with athletes like Matthew Denny expressing worries about potential injuries from the slippery conditions. Despite these challenges, and with a supportive audience braving the poor weather, the event drew to a successful close with Ståhl celebrating his well-earned gold. Post-competition, he expressed elation at the victory, stating, "It is magical. Absolutely wonderful."
