Key details
In a significant development addressing labor exploitation in Sweden, 29 Thai berry pickers who were subjected to harsh working conditions in Åsele, Västerbotten, during 2023 have each been awarded 80,000 SEK in compensation by Brottsoffermyndigheten. This compensation totals 2.3 million SEK and aims to provide a sense of justice to those affected.
These workers were among roughly 150 Thai berry pickers lured to northern Sweden with promises of fair wages and decent working environments. Instead, they endured grueling twelve-hour workdays, seven days a week, often without pay initially. Their living conditions were poor, characterized by insufficient food and substandard housing.
The exploitation led to legal action in 2024, resulting in two employers being convicted and sentenced to prison for severe human trafficking offenses against nine of the berry pickers. However, authorities acknowledge that many more workers were likely exploited, and compensation efforts may extend to others.
Brottsoffermyndigheten hopes that the financial reparations will offer some measure of restitution for the victims. This case highlights ongoing challenges in protecting vulnerable migrant laborers within Sweden’s agricultural sectors and underscores the importance of rigorous enforcement against labor abuses.
