Wildfires in Southern Europe to Cause Swedish Wine Shortages and Price Hikes

The wildfires devastating vineyards across Southern Europe are expected to significantly affect the supply and prices of French and Spanish wines in Sweden. Elisabeth Due, CEO of the Spirits and Wine Suppliers Association, detailed the damage caused by fires in key wine regions such as Pyrénées-Orientales and Bordeaux in France, along with Andalusia and Rioja in Spain. These fires have destroyed grape harvests, either directly through flames or indirectly due to smoke contamination, which compromises grape quality.

Due noted that old vines producing some of the finest wines, often 30 to 40 years old, are especially difficult to replace. Replanting and cultivating new vines can take at least five years, and some producers may choose not to rebuild their affected vineyards. Bordeaux wines are uniquely hard to replace given their dependence on specific grape varieties, and Sweden imports around 100 different Bordeaux wines.

While the wine currently consumed in Sweden was harvested two years ago and immediate shortages are not yet felt, the ongoing effects will likely impact availability in the coming years. Due anticipates a price increase of about 15% for the affected wines as the industry braces for reduced supply. She also emphasized the significant human consequences of the fires, with hundreds of thousands evacuated from their homes.
