Storm Anna Triggers Historic Red Warning and Widespread Disruptions Across Sweden

Storm Anna has brought historic snowfall warnings to Sweden, causing widespread power outages, transport cancellations, and severe disruptions in Gävleborg and neighboring regions.

    Key details

  • • SMHI issues first red snowfall warning since 2021 for northern Uppland and Gävleborg counties due to Storm Anna.
  • • Over 4,000 households in Gävleborg are without power, with repairs ongoing, particularly in Bollnäs.
  • • Bus and train services suspended in affected areas including Hälsingland and the Stockholm-Sundsvall route.
  • • Multiple weather alerts (red, orange, yellow) cover extensive regions, warning of heavy snow, strong winds, and icy conditions.

The severe weather event Storm Anna has prompted the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) to issue its first-ever red snowfall warning since 2021, signaling extreme weather conditions with very serious societal consequences. The storm is expected to deposit several decimeters of snow, with some areas in northern Uppland and Gävleborg counties potentially receiving up to half a meter of snow. These conditions have led to significant disruptions across affected regions.

In Gävleborg, over 4,000 households are reported to be without power, with around half of those outages centered in Bollnäs. Ellevio, the power provider, has deployed 20 technicians along with additional materials to expedite restoration efforts, though challenges persist due to the harsh weather. Public transportation has been severely impacted, as all bus services in Hälsingland have been suspended and train routes between Stockholm and Sundsvall canceled until Friday noon to safeguard travelers amid the storm’s intensifying snowfall and strong winds.

Multiple weather warnings are in place besides the red alert: orange warnings cover southeastern Västernorrland and larger parts of Gävleborg, forecasting 2-4 decimeters of snow, while yellow warnings for snow, wind, and sudden icy conditions affect extensive areas, including Svealand, Götaland, and southern Norrland. Authorities have strongly urged the public to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel to reduce risk.

Storm Anna's arrival has thus severely interrupted daily life with extensive power outages, transportation shutdowns, and hazardous conditions driven by heavy snowfall nearing half a meter in some parts. SMHI’s rare issuance of a highest-level snowfall warning highlights the gravely serious situation the storm presents to Sweden.

As the situation develops, efforts to restore power and resume transport services continue while safety advisories remain firmly in place for the public to minimize risks from this historic snowstorm.
