Säpo Warns of Increased Threats to Sweden Amid Escalating Russian Activities

The Swedish Security Service (Säpo) has issued a stark warning regarding an increasingly serious security situation in Sweden, highlighting Russia as the primary and most significant threat. Säpo Chief Charlotte von Essen emphasized that Russia’s activities have grown more aggressive and risky, including sabotage, espionage, and cyber operations that pose direct concerns for Swedish national security.

Von Essen described the threat level as serious and potentially worsening, with Russia engaging in covert influence campaigns, recruitment of agents within Sweden, and various forms of sabotage, some of which have affected other European countries. Despite heightened public vigilance and increased reporting of suspicious activities, Säpo cautioned that not all incidents are attributable to Russia, advising restraint to avoid unwarranted escalation.

The terror threat in Sweden remains elevated at level three on a five-point scale, reflecting the possibility of terrorist attacks. The main threats stem from violent Islamist extremism and right-wing extremism, with the latter now more visible but not assessed as a direct widespread threat. However, lone individuals connected to these movements could possess the intention and capability to carry out attacks.

Security Police reports unveil a broader context of global instability, with recent incidents in Europe and Australia amplifying the risks to Sweden. The Russian intelligence services continue active intelligence gathering, influence activities, and technology acquisitions, especially aimed at supporting adversarial goals related to the geopolitical conflict surrounding Ukraine.
