Over 200 Swedish Artists Unite for Democracy and Climate Action at Almedalen 2026

During the ongoing Almedalen week in Visby, over 200 Swedish artists and celebrities have come together to advocate for stronger climate policies and the protection of democracy in Sweden. The initiative, supported by Greenpeace, launches a digital petition titled "Vi är Sverige" aimed at countering populism, racism, and climate denial while fostering unity across political divides.

The call for action is a response to mounting concerns over missed climate targets and warnings of democratic backsliding in Sweden. Artist Thomas Stenström, one of the initiative's leaders, highlighted the urgency of the cause, warning against becoming desensitized to harmful political rhetoric and stressing the need for public engagement. Stenström also expressed a hope to restore a sense of collective community during Almedalen, describing the event as a "folk festival" and a manifestation for an open society.

The public event at Hamnplan in Visby, free and open to all, features performances by prominent artists including Cherrie, Titiyo, and Melissa Horn, alongside speeches underscoring calls for inclusivity and action against environmental neglect. Greenpeace Sweden's head, Frida Bengtsson, criticized the current government's insufficient environmental protections, deeming the mandate a lost opportunity for meaningful climate action.

Notable signatories of the petition include Lars Winnerbäck, Lisa Nilsson, Alexander Skarsgård, and Daniela Rathana. More than 150 cultural figures have already endorsed the initiative, which they plan to formally present to the Swedish parliament. The movement intends to unite Swedes beyond political affiliations to defend democracy and climate for a shared future.
