Local Government Withdrawal Spurs Political Backlash and Threatens Civil Society Funding

The decision by Sjöbo municipality to exit the Sydöstra Skånes räddningsförbund partnership has sparked opposition from Christian Democrats in neighboring municipalities, who argue the move is financially unwise. Sjöbo's council scheduled the withdrawal for autumn 2025, prompting KD representatives from four municipalities to convene in Tomelilla aiming to counteract the decision. Carl-Fredrik von Oelreich, a KD politician, criticized claims that the collaboration is costly, warning that leaving it would likely result in higher expenses for Sjöbo.

Meanwhile, in another blow to civil society, Micaela Romantschuk, leader of Hem och Skola, expressed intense frustration toward government policies threatening the organization's funding. Hem och Skola, an entity active for nearly 60 years supporting Finnish-Swedish schools, faces potential cuts that could reduce its funding by half, putting many jobs at risk. Romantschuk called the government's approach “insanely stupid” and voiced deep concern about the damage done to civil society, describing her trust in politicians as broken.
