Zinedin Smajlovic, a 22-year-old footballer recently signed by Olympiakos, has decided to represent Bosnia-Herzegovina at the international level, opting out of Sweden's national team. This decision followed meetings with the national team coaches of both countries in Athens. While Sweden's head coach Graham Potter made last-ditch efforts to retain him, it was Bosnia's head coach Sergej Barbarez's clear plan for Smajlovic’s role in their defensive lineup that ultimately convinced the player to switch allegiance.

Originally, Smajlovic’s parents hail from Bosnia, and in 2023, he had moved from the Bosnian U21 team to Sweden’s national squad due to a perceived lack of attention from the Bosnian Football Federation. Reflecting on that time, he expressed disappointment, stating that the discussions did not meet his expectations. His return to Bosnia-Herzegovina follows a similar pattern among other players like Anel Ahmedhodzic, Benjamin Tahirovic, and Dennis Hadzikadunic, who have also switched from Sweden to Bosnia-Herzegovina.
