Woman Found Dead in Investigation of Tjörn Boat Collision

Investigations continue following the tragic boat accident in Hakefjorden near Tjörn, where a capsized 7.6-meter recreational boat carrying a family of four was involved in a collision with a 90-meter Norwegian-flagged bulk carrier. The accident was first reported at 22:03 on July 28, 2026, after a woman heard cries for help and a man contacted emergency services about his missing relatives.

Rescue operations by the Swedish Maritime Administration initially located a man in his 40s and a preschool-age child seriously injured in the water. Both were transferred to the mainland amid poor weather and visibility conditions, which prevented helicopter ambulance use. The search for a 40-year-old woman and another child was suspended overnight due to adverse weather and exhaustion of personnel but resumed the next morning before being called off when it became unlikely to find survivors.

Early investigations suggest the recreational boat collided with a bulk carrier traveling from Uddevalla to Kragerø, with no crew members aboard the bulk carrier noticing the impact, complicating the inquiry. Radar and safety equipment on the bulk carrier are under scrutiny by police and the Swedish Transport Agency.

On July 30, police announced the woman previously reported missing was found dead near the capsized boat. Authorities have notified her relatives but have withheld additional details about the location or circumstances of the discovery.

The collision raises questions about maritime safety compliance for both vessels and the chain of events leading to the accident. Efforts to determine how the collision went unnoticed by the bulk carrier's crew and the adequacy of safety measures on the recreational boat remain central to the ongoing investigation.
