Woman Arrested and Hospital Security Tightened Following Poisoning at Akademiska Children's Clinic

Four employees at the Akademiska sjukhuset children's clinic in Uppsala were hospitalized after suspected poisoning incidents that took place over a ten-day period beginning in late October. These individuals exhibited similar symptoms such as shaking, hot flashes, rapid heart rate, and notably critically low potassium levels, requiring intensive care. The poisoning investigation commenced in early November with police suspecting that the victims' water bottles had been contaminated, possibly with dangerously high levels of caffeine powder.

A 60-year-old woman, an employee at the hospital, was arrested on suspicion of serious assault connected to these poisoning cases. Initially held under suspicion of serious assault, she was later charged with attempted murder in three cases, although the Uppsala District Court confirmed her detention specifically on the charge of serious assault. Prosecutor Emma Häggström stated there is reasonable suspicion against the suspect, who has refused legal counsel but was assigned a public defender.

In the wake of these alarming events, Akademiska sjukhuset has significantly increased security measures. Wards have been locked, security personnel have been stationed outside the units, and staff have received updated information to ensure safety and support. Viktor Ekström, the hospital's security chief, acknowledged the emotional toll on employees and emphasized that care for staff remains a priority. Additionally, the Swedish Work Environment Authority plans to conduct a rapid inspection of the hospital to assess the situation further.

These developments underscore a serious threat that impacted hospital employees, prompting swift legal actions and reinforced safety protocols to prevent further incidents.
