Volvo Cars Unveils Major 2027 Upgrades to 40-Series with Enhanced Safety, Technology, and Design

Volvo Cars has announced significant 2027 model year updates to its popular 40-series lineup, comprising the XC40, EX40, and EC40. These upgrades emphasize advancements in safety systems, interior and exterior design refreshes, and cutting-edge technology integration, positioning the 40-series to remain a bestseller in the competitive automotive market.

On the exterior, the cars now sport a more modern and confident appearance highlighted by new Matrix LED headlights featuring an evolved 'Thor's Hammer' light signature. The XC40 additionally offers new wheel options ranging from 18 to 20 inches. The front fascia has been redesigned with refined grilles, bumpers, and fenders, while the EX40 and EC40 maintain distinctive touches. Rear lighting has also been updated on the XC40 and EX40, whereas the EC40 retains its previous rear design.

Inside, Volvo introduces a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system positioned prominently above the dashboard for improved accessibility. This system integrates Google’s next-generation AI assistant, Google Gemini, enabling drivers to interact naturally for navigation, messaging, and more. Enhancements extend to interior materials including new upholstery options with leather and Brown Ash wood, upgraded ambient lighting, improved wireless charging, and additional storage solutions aimed at practicality.

Volvo continues to prioritize safety with a comprehensive suite of new and enhanced technologies. Real-time collision detection and automatic emergency braking are supported by a new advanced sensor platform using radar and cameras that improve situational awareness. Additional active safety features include a Door Opening Alert that warns passengers of nearby cyclists and an upgraded Pilot Assist system offering smoother lane changes and curve following. The 360-degree camera system now provides a 3D view to assist with parking.

On the electric front, the EX40 and EC40 deliver impressive ranges of up to 575 km and 584 km respectively, reinforcing Volvo’s electrification strategy. These models will benefit from regular over-the-air software updates to introduce new functionalities and improvements.

Akhil Krishnan, acting head of Volvo Cars’ 30 and 40 series, said, "By further developing the design, technology, and safety features of our 40-series cars, we have created the best versions yet. These already popular models are well-positioned to remain among our best-selling cars for years to come."

Pricing starts from 473,000 SEK for the XC40, while the electric EX40 and EC40 begin at 539,900 SEK. Orders have opened in selected markets, with production slated to commence later this fall.
