Viscaria Copper Mine Advances as a Climate-Efficient Powerhouse with EU Strategic Support

The Viscaria copper mine in Kiruna, Sweden, is rapidly progressing towards becoming one of the world's most climate-efficient operations, driven by extensive use of fossil-free electricity and sustainable technologies. Scheduled to begin production in 2027, the mine aims to produce approximately 26,000 tons of copper annually, meeting about 5% of Europe’s copper needs, according to reports from both industry sources.

Located near the fully electrified Malmbanan railway, Viscaria benefits from eco-friendly transport routes that allow fossil-free rail shipments of copper concentrate to ports in Narvik and the Swedish coast. This strategy significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with traditional mining logistics.

Fundamental to the project’s green credentials is its power supply, which is secured by a 45-megawatt fossil-free electricity agreement with Vattenfall Eldistribution. This comes with plans for a new substation to ensure direct delivery. Furthermore, the mine operates six wind turbines installed to generate up to 10 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually. Machinery utilized on-site is powered by hydro and wind energy as well as HVO fuel, underscoring a commitment to low climate impact.

Viscaria’s reopening aligns closely with the European Union’s Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), which designates copper as a strategic resource vital for Europe’s technological and defense sectors. The EU aims to reduce reliance on imports by bolstering domestic production of essential metals. Given copper’s irreplaceable role, the mine is seen as a cornerstone in Europe's efforts to secure sustainable, responsible supplies.

As one of the few mines integrating comprehensive fossil-free infrastructure and sustainable transport solutions, Viscaria sets a benchmark in responsible mining practices within northern Sweden and Europe.
