Visby Hospital Launches 'Konstkanalen' to Promote Healing Through Art

Visby lasarett in Gotland has launched an innovative public art channel called Konstkanalen, designed to enhance the healing environment for patients and visitors by showcasing calming art films on hospital television screens. The initiative, spearheaded by the hospital's property management team and executed in collaboration with Region Gotland and Gotlands Museum, aims to combine cultural engagement with health benefits to support patient recovery.

Patrik Gahm, the hospital's property manager, highlighted the historical importance of integrating art in healthcare settings to provide soothing views that contribute positively to patient well-being. The channel features slow-paced films of public artworks displayed both within the hospital and at the nearby Visborg town hall, fostering a serene atmosphere for viewers.

Berit Ångman Svedjemo, curator for public art at Gotlands Museum, emphasized that Konstkanalen is designed to create a stimulating yet calming environment conducive to recovery. The collaborative project aligns with regional cultural and health initiatives aimed at increasing cultural experiences, particularly among children and youth in Gotland.

Funded by Konst och Form Gotland and Kultur och Hälsa, the films are produced by Region Gotland alongside Gotlands Museum. This pioneering endeavor underscores the growing recognition of art's therapeutic role within healthcare, enriching both patient experiences and public access to cultural resources.
