Violent Clashes and Firework-Related Injuries Mar New Year's Eve in Sweden

As Sweden welcomed 2026, New Year's Eve celebrations were overshadowed by multiple violent incidents and accidents involving fireworks across the country. Several individuals sustained serious injuries, and the night was marked by both intentional violence and accidental fires.

In Hörby, a young man suffered severe facial injuries after being struck by a firework, prompting emergency services to rush him to the hospital for treatment. In a separate incident in the same town, a man in his 30s ignited fireworks indoors in his kitchen, resulting in a small fire and injuries to his hands and fingers. This incident necessitated emergency response and further hospital care.

Two attempted murders further darkened the night. In Stockholm's Farsta district, a man in his 40s was stabbed multiple times at a hotel, sustaining serious injuries. Police have launched a criminal investigation into this attack. Meanwhile, in Kungsbacka, police apprehended a 30-year-old man who attacked his 70-year-old relative, causing head injuries severe enough to require hospitalization. Authorities have charged the assailant with attempted murder.

The night also saw multiple fires allegedly linked to fireworks. A barn near Bröttorp on Öland caught fire around midnight, though thankfully no injuries were reported. Similarly, a shop in Klippan was set ablaze, believed to be sparked by fireworks, but no casualties occurred. In Malmö, police investigated an explosion that caused damage to the façade and a window of a residential building. Charges related to dangerous explosives have been filed in connection to this incident.
