Västra Götalandsregionen Unveils 2027 Healthcare Funding Priorities with Focus on Psychiatry and Elderly Care

The Västra Götalandsregionen board has finalized critical decisions for the 2027 healthcare budget and operational assignments, prioritizing mental health, elderly care, and reducing patient wait times. This strategic allocation aims to improve overall healthcare accessibility and quality across the region.

For 2027, the region is increasing resources dedicated to psychiatric services, including adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and eating disorder treatment. Additionally, forensic psychiatry will receive more funding to enhance capacity, patient safety, and collaboration. The board's plan also emphasizes expanding hospital beds and strengthening emergency and ambulance services to meet growing demands.

Specialist care for the elderly sees enhanced support focusing on coordinated care, safer medication use, and higher patient safety standards. Regionhälsan, Habilitering & Hälsa, and Folktandvården are included in the funding decisions, reinforcing youth clinics, domestic violence victim support, hearing rehabilitation, and specialized dental care for those with significant needs.

A total allocation of 18.4 billion SEK is designated for Sahlgrenska University Hospital in 2027, highlighting the scale of investment. The board also adjusted the compensation framework by 2.5% for indexing and specifically earmarked funds to cover increased medication costs.

In response to long-standing patient wait times, 75 million SEK is reserved to expedite care for the region's longest-waiting patients. Over 4,700 individuals have waited more than 365 days for specialist appointments, with significant backlogs in internal medicine, ophthalmology, orthopedics, and cardiology.

To better support diverse patient needs, the region has engaged in four new partnerships with nonprofit organizations—Ågrenska, SHEDO, the Swedish Red Cross, and Skyddsvärnet in Gothenburg. These collaborations aim to complement public healthcare by providing additional tailored support services.

New quality standards and clearer requirements will take effect in 2027 for primary care (Vårdval vårdcentral) and rehabilitation services (Vårdval rehab), which will strengthen oversight and ensure higher care consistency. This comprehensive approach underscores the region’s commitment to elevating patient experiences and healthcare outcomes in the coming year.
