Vänsterpartiet Bars 15 Politicians for Supporting Hamas Terrorism in 2023 Attack

Vänsterpartiet, a Swedish political party, has excluded 15 politicians from the upcoming municipal elections due to their public support for Hamas following its terror attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The party took disciplinary action after these politicians openly celebrated Hamas’s actions, an assault that resulted in over a thousand deaths and more than 200 abductions, according to reports.

Among the affected candidates are members from municipalities such as Helsingborg, Örebro, Sävsjö, Eksjö, Växjö, Landskrona, and Halmstad. In Helsingborg specifically, three candidates were removed for participating in what was described as a celebration of the Hamas attack. One candidate involved claimed the event was misrepresented, stating, “We were told it would be a gathering, not a celebration. Then music came on.”

Jesper Sahlén, the district chairman for Vänsterpartiet in Skåne, clearly condemned any expression of support for terrorism, emphasizing that such positions are entirely incompatible with the party's values. He expressed the party's firm stance against glorifying terror attacks, asserting that such attitudes disqualify anyone from serving as a party politician.

Tomas Gustafsson, chairman of Vänsterpartiet’s Helsingborg association, echoed these concerns, underscoring that antisemitism has no place in the party. While acknowledging the hardships faced by many Palestinians in Sweden, Gustafsson clarified that the excluded candidates’ statements do not reflect the party's official views. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to improve candidate vetting in order to prevent future controversies.

Notably, Hamas is recognized as a terrorist organization by Sweden and numerous other countries. Vänsterpartiet’s decision reflects a strong rejection of terrorism support within Swedish politics, reinforcing the party’s commitment to democratic and peaceful values ahead of the elections.
