US Approves Potential Sale of Himars Rocket System to Sweden Amid Defense Expansion

The United States has given the green light for Sweden to purchase the advanced Himars rocket artillery system, a key development in Sweden's military modernization efforts. While the approval signals US support, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has confirmed that no final purchase agreement has yet been signed.

The Himars system, already employed by both the US Army and Navy, is notable for its long-range capabilities, varying according to the type of ammunition used, with a reach spanning several dozen miles. Defense expert Per Olsson from the Swedish Defense Research Agency (FOI) underscored the strategic advantage the system would provide Sweden.

This possible acquisition forms part of Sweden's broader defense buildup, driven largely by shifting security dynamics in Europe, notably Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Sweden's subsequent NATO membership. Reflective of these tensions, Sweden's defense budget has surged dramatically, more than doubling since 2021 to approximately 143 billion SEK in 2025, equating to around 2.4% of GDP.

Prime Minister Kristersson has acknowledged ongoing discussions with the US concerning the Himars system, emphasizing that the procurement process is still underway and not finalized. The increased defense expenditure aligns with Sweden’s commitment to enhancing its military capabilities in response to evolving regional threats.

With US authorization in place, Sweden edges closer to securing a sophisticated long-range artillery asset, poised to strengthen its operational readiness and deterrent posture amid a tumultuous geopolitical landscape.
