Three Dead in Stockholm Double-Decker Bus Crash: Witnesses and Driver Details Emerge

A tragic bus accident in Stockholm's Östermalm district resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to three others after a double-decker bus crashed into a bus shelter at Tekniska högskolan. The incident occurred on Valhallavägen, and despite the severity, the driver, who had been on duty just over two hours, is regarded as a valued employee and was about to take a break when the crash happened, according to Lovisa Åbom from the bus company Transdev. Sweden's Accident Investigation Authority has launched a formal investigation into the crash.

Witnesses described a harrowing scene. Zaid Al Hussen, 20, recounted how he helped a bleeding man by stopping the blood flow until paramedics arrived, and criticized bystanders who chose to film the tragedy rather than offer help. Another witness, Viktoria Stenborg Lindström, who cycles past the site daily, was shocked by the suddenness of the bus smashing through the shelter and noted how quickly the site was cleared, though she emphasized the importance of remembering the tragedy. Candles and flowers were left at the site in remembrance of the victims.

Ingrid, another eyewitness, detailed the bus’s actions before the crash, noting it rolled into Valhallavägen where passengers disembarked before the driver switched off the route display and continued driving. This behavior suggests the incident was not accidental but the precise circumstances remain under investigation.

Meanwhile, staff from the bus company remain on site supporting the drivers as the area returns to normal traffic flow. The incident has deeply affected local residents and the transit community alike, underscoring the need for compassion and safety in public transport.
